Microsoft Application Virtualization (MS App-V) platform enables applications to be implemented in real-time to any client from a virtual application server, that does not require the traditional local installation of the applications. Only the App-V client needs to be installed on the client machines with the real-time deployment, rest of the application data is permanently stored on the virtual application server. Software is transmitted on demand when it is initialized for the first time. The App-V stack protects the execution environment from an application making any changes directly to the core operating system's file system and/or Registry, instead confine them to an application-specific "bubble". App-V applications are also shielded from each other, which enables different versions of the same application to run under App-V simultaneously and also ensure mutually exclusive applications to co-exist on the same system.

MS App-V supports user/policy based access control and also allows centralized installation and management of deployed applications, through which the administrators can define and restrict access to the applications. MS App-V permits copy of applications across multiple application servers for better scalability and fault tolerance , apart from tracking usage of virtualized applications through a tracking interface.

The user has access to a list of applications offered by the App-V client, which helps the user to launch a virtualized instance of the required application. Email notification is sent to the system administrator on the actions, except in cases where administrator's confirmation is explicitly required. Based on the configuration required for the application to start streaming , it will initialize or check the Active Directory for the user's rights and stream the application to the user , if the rights are granted.The App-V client also has the feature to install local shortcuts that bootstrap the process of launching individual virtualized software instances.
